We decided to try The Northern today, glad to see someone upgrade the old Trappers. The good: I liked the decor, plenty of space between tables. Much needed updates, great bar area. The bathrooms were nice, great faucets. The service was good, but a little slow, but we did find the last open table so they were busy. I will say the French fries and the fried pickles were good, the fries were well seasoned and tasted very good, a cut above the norm, the fried sliced pickles were good and the dip was just right, just not very many on the plate for $7. The bad: Not impressed with the food. The burgers, while big we're average. The blackened northern tacos were below average. The chili also was maybe a C+. I will try this place again in the future, but not the fish tacos, or the chili.

As a 12 year resident of the Chisago Lakes area I was quite excited to see that someone had decided to take a run at turning "Trappers" in to a successful endeavor. Though I had been encouraged by others that said The Northern was "good" I soon discovered after my first visit that the food was mearly "not bad". It seems that expectations in the Chisago Lakes area is at a point where the local DQ is included as a dinning option. Thankfully, in my desperation to find "good" food without driving a half hour I decided to try The Northern once more. What an unexpected surprise! I ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich I could tell by looking at it that this wasn't a hastily prepared knock-off that is so often the case of meals served up this way. My sandwich came piled high with large chunks of lean, tender, barbecued pork, not simply roasted pork butt slathered in BBQ sauce. Accompanying the sandwich was a large portion of well seasoned fries, again the owners did not opt for the cheapest French fries they could get from Sysco Foods, they seam to care about providing their customers with a quality product. If your looking for fine dinning, skip this place, but if what your looking for is quality pub food at a reasonable price The Northern Tavern may be the place.

C H A E E E Z C U RRRRRRDSSSSS Wow, I was always hesitant to stop here when it was Trappers, never did, but what a cute place it is now. Love the furnishings, love the menu, love the tvs, love the bar, love the location, love the cutesy wall decor, love the clean bathroom, love the hooks under the bar for purses, LOVE THE VIEW OVER THE LAKE. Started out with the cheese curds, which weren't even curds. They were square blocks of white cheddar, lightly battered and fried to perfection. Ordered the cheeseburger, and had HIGH hopes when asked what temp I wanted it. Why bother asking if you are going to cook it well anyway?? The quality of the beef was meh, nothing a little BBQ sauce couldn't fix. It is difficult to find a burger whose beef is of superior grade that it can stand on it's own, know what I mean? I even got a sesame seed bun with that burger ! Learned about a new to me IPA Goose Head from Chi Town. Then there was the bartender..... at least I understand that in rural ares like this, owners are often lucky just to find reliable help. Add well trained, personable, and competent to that, and it rarely happens. The pretty, really hot young bartender treated me like the majority of pretty, hot bartenders do-- crappy, with attitude. Good way to blow a tip. Server Golden Rule -- Treat everyone the same. T A T E R T O T S H A D C H O P P E D P A R S L E Y O N T H E M !

The food was good, we had the cob salad and the crispy fish tacos. The cob salad was a decent size portion and tasty. The fish tacos came recommended as my previous choice (Mac and cheese) was shot down by my honest but very polite waiter. Overall good food good service. Will be going back.

Solid. Not a lot of choices in the area and they were more than competent. Nice people serving good, filling food and with affordable prices.

Our family loves it here. The cheese curds are amazing and the food is all great! It has fun arcade games in the waiting area to occupy the kids and just a fin atmosphere overall. Monday nights they have Bingo which is always busy and fun.

My daughter and a friend went to the Northern tonight. It is Wednesday and their wings (Which are fantastic, not the little tiny ones!) I felt bad for the waitress who was new and in training who ended up having another staff member cost her tip. One of the first things out of her mouth was that I could not have a to go box. I don't know that we had even ordered our wings yet. I told her that when I left if I had food left over I expected a to-go box. Of course, out of the 24 wings we ordered, we had five left over and needed a to-go box. She went and got a female, don't know of she was the manager or not. She read me the riot act about how on Wednesdays they have a problem with people ordering too many wings and not eating them all and taking them home so they do not provide to-go boxes. There was a seriousness to her tone that I am sure she has used before with drunks at the bar. Now when she came over she had her deep voice, rigid shoulders, arms crossed over her chest like she was going to intimidate me. I explained to her that we have eaten here before and that the last time and the times before that we had been given to-go boxes. She demanded to know who the staff was because The Northerns "policy" is to not give out to-go boxes on Wednesday. Their "Policy". I wish I could download the phone video into this review. I informed her that my policy was not to tip on Wednesdays then. Then she tells me I don't have to "be mean" and turned and walked away. We wrapped the wings in napkins. I saw the lady that had been at the booth in back of us if I could use her to-go box (her husband had ordered wings and some magical way they ended up with a burger size to-go box). She reached back to her table and gave me the container. She told me that she "had seen the whole thing". I asked her if she could believe it. She shook her head "'NO". So, The Northern has excellent wings. Actually they are only second to the wings we had once at a Support the Troops rally. They also have some staff with either a major attitude (based on prior visits and other reviews I'm not the only one that has noticed the crabby staff}. The girl at the door with the glasses and our original waitress was very nice as was a waitress name Gail. A business that has such a great product at a great price that they are trying to limit how much customers order. I'm not talking about five dozen wings, we had 5 wings left. If they need to they can use my Costco card. A hundred to-go containers are only $12.00 there.

Went here with my girlfriend one night at the beginning of a really bad thunderstorm. It is a very clean, pretty cool looking place. We split a buffalo chicken sandwich and a cuban sandwich and both were really good. I also loved the tater tots. By the time we got done eating, the storm had progressed to a monsoon. On our way out, the bartender said we really shouldn't leave until the storm blew over. Despite the fact that it was closing time, they offered to refill our drinks and let us snuggle on the couch in the game area until the wind died down. I would definitely come back to this place for the food and the very friendly staff.

Stopped here for breakfast. Service was very friendly and very attentive. The bloody Mary's were excellent, served with a skewer of shrimp, cheese, pickle, pepper, and a piece of crispy bacon. The breakfast options are simple but delicious. They put a lot of cheese on the breakfast boats, could be a little too much for some. We will definitely be going back.

Excellent Spicy Turkey Sandwich and attentive staff. Authentic country atmosphere, with stunning view of small lake and farm through panoramic windows. Great Whiskey selection.

Stopped here after a hockey game and boy am I glad we did. I knew it was going to be good when we walked in at 7pm on a Monday and there was only one table open. Flo had the fish sandwich which was out of sight good, backed up with crispy tater tots. I had the bacon burger on a pretzel bun which was perfect. Price was less than we expected, the waitresses were prompt and polite. Definitely will stop again when in town

Absolutely horrible service. We waited like 10 minutes for our waiter to get us a drink, then they brought our my food and not hers after 20 minutes. After another 20 minutes of waiting for them to bring hers out and still nothing we asked for our check. The manager came over right after I left and thankfully told us we wouldn't be charged anything.

Stopped in for a snack and beverage on the way to northern Wisconsin with friends. Good service, plentiful portions and nice atmosphere. Very casual, which is fine. Will try again for sure. Fyi, try the skin on fries. Yummy!

Love this place!! Finally a restaurant, or business for that matter in Chisago county that knows what's up! The menu is current and offers a lot of choices. My family has always enjoyed everything we've tried, from the square shaped cheese curds that are amazing to the loaded hot dogs, hamburgers and pastrami sandwiches, it is all so good!! Can't wait to try the infamous monster bloody Mary's that are on special on Sundays...definitely recommend this place!

Had party of nine and made accommodations pretty quickly. Drinks were REAL cheap, 3 large rail drinks, a Surly Beer & a Woodford Bourbon was $25 including tip on a Saturday night. Food was pretty standard fare. I had the Sasquatch burger special which stayed with me a bit longer then wanted. In Chisago tri city area I would say this is the best burger joint around, and can now see why people don't leave their table with those bar prices.

Stopped in to give it a try. Just 4 of us. They were busy on a Saturday afternoon, but we were seated right away. Attentive waitress, got our drinks and apps right away. Monster Bloody Mary was delish! Waitress was on top of our drinks and keeping our table clean. The jalapeño poppers rocked and the burgers were fresh and juicy. Great service, great food and drinks, great atmosphere. What more can you ask for? We'll be back for sure!

Being a bloody mary enthusiast I have been jonesing for a stellar one for months...most are far to salty, lacking in flavor and far to watery. Grody. This one (being the basic with s pickle, celery and olive) was superb. I went with the house infused vodka(onions and peppers) holy schnikes a party in my mouth!!! Highly recommend this place if you're craving a bloody!! Also had a stellar waitress! Attentive waitress w out being to annoying! Had to wait a few to be seated, overall uber pleased after hearing mixed reviews about the place.

I have been here several times and the food is pretty good. The tots are unbelievable! If I were judging this place on food and atmosphere alone I would give at least 4 stars and possibly even 5 because the price is also reasonable. The problem is always the crappy service. A co-worker and I went for lunch here yesterday and I am not sure if I want to go back because of the service. We sat at the bar and waited at least 5 minutes or more before anyone said anything to us. She finally came over and got us some drinks and took our order. My food came out with fries instead of the delicious tots that I ordered and, of course, she disappears before I can even say anything. My drink was pretty much empty when I got my food and, of course, she didn't seem to care. We were never asked if our food was acceptable and she didn't even come back to us until she brought our bill. If this place could get a staff that has any sense of customer service or even approachable friendliness it would be a pretty awesome restaurant. I still put a tip on the bar when I left but I really shouldn't have after thinking about it. I guess it is just a natural reaction anymore to leave a tip but it should be based on the level of service that you receive.

Food was ok, slightly under average at best. Probably won't go back again. The decor is decent and they had ice races going on behind the restaurant on the frozen lake.

I am one of the few people maybe that loved Trappers, but this place is a neat change for that building. The ambiance of this place is very lively and energetic and looks like it would be a fun place to hang out with friends and have some wings. Our server was very friendly, but the order took way too long. The menu had a huge variety of unique items and really looks like it would be worth trying an assortment of the items. I ordered a burger with macaroni and cheese on it, and I ordered it medium. If the burger would have come out any way other than way over well done like it did, I think it would have been great, the seasoning and toppings were great, it was just way over cooked which really dried it out and ruined it, sadly my wife's came the same way.

Ok, got seated and had to wait forever to get service! So I hope the food makes up for it!

This is the biggest and best sports bar that the Lakes Area has ever had. Great food, service and atmosphere! Great views and plenty of televisions to watch the game.
